Obituary

Melanie Therese Hunick was born on September 11, 1977, in Alameda, New Mexico, and was a resident of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. At the age of 48, Melanie was called home to the Lord on May 30, 2026.

Melanie’s greatest joy in life was her daughter, Victoria Thompson, whom she loved with all her heart. She was a devoted mother, a loyal friend, and a cherished member of a large and loving family.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Victoria Thompson; her brother, Eric Justo Hunick; her sister-in-law and best friend, Ann Hunick; her aunt and uncle, Rosie and Louie Apodaca; and her dear cousins, who were more like siblings to her: Irene De La O (husband Nate), Yolanda Maestas (boyfriend Marcos Candelaria), Samatha Olivas (boyfriend Gerald Archibeque), and Raymond Maestas. She also leaves behind many cousins whom she loved as her nieces and nephews: Justo Maestas, Emerlinda “Emmie” Maestas, Reyna Maestas, Alejandro Bojorquez, Andres Bojorquez, Elijah Maestas, Matthew De La O, Jonathan De La O, Legend Archibeque, and Maximus Archibeque, along with countless friends and loved ones whose lives she touched.

Melanie was preceded in death by her mother, Rosann Hunick; her father, Justo Henry “JR” Hunick; her sister, Melinda Hunick; and many beloved grandparents, aunts, and uncles who surely welcomed her into Heaven with open arms.

Melanie will be deeply missed for her courageous spirit, warm smile, and unforgettable laugh. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her, living life to the fullest and loving fiercely. She gave generously of herself and made every person she met feel valued and cared for. She was a treasured daughter, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, and the memories she created will be carried in our hearts forever.

A heart of gold stopped beating,

working hands came to rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us,

He only takes the best.
