Merrill “Tubby” Kent Hovet, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 15, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on January 11, 1946, in Graften, North Dakota, to Knute and Alfa Hovet.

Merrill graduated from Graften Central High School in 1964. He proudly served four years in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant and serving during the Vietnam War. His military decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and Vietnam Service Medal with two Good Conduct Medals.

Following his military service, Merrill dedicated 24 years to the State of New Mexico Juvenile Justice Department. He took pride in his work and the difference he made throughout his career.

In 1970, Merrill married Willia Jane Roybal, and they shared 56 years of marriage filled with love, family, and cherished memories.

Merrill was a talented handyman who enjoyed working with his hands and taking on projects. He also loved sports and, most of all, spending time with his family. His kindness, dedication, and love will be remembered by all who knew him.

Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, Knute and Alfa Hovet, and his brother, Darrell.

He is survived by his twin brother, Meredith “Tiny” Hovet; his wife, Willia Jane Hovet; his son, Troy Hovet; his daughter, Jane “Tootsie” Shrader and her husband, Norman; his son, Kevin Hovet and his wife, Denise; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Merrill’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever cherish the time they shared with him.
