Michael Quintana Sr., known by many as "Mike", passed away on May 7, 2025, ten months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Over his 71 years of life, he held various roles both literally and figuratively. He was recognized for his distinct features and appearance, and his approach to life. His presence enriched the lives of numerous friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. He was recognized for his core values and beliefs.
Mike had a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors engaging in activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and rafting down the Rio Grande with family and friends. He also had a fondness for animals and supported the adoption of rescue pets and contributed regularly to the N.M. Animal Humane Association.
After 42 years of service, he retired from the New Mexico Gas Company in September 2020. He was well known within the Albuquerque community and was acknowledged for his willingness to listen and assist. Mike was a skilled welder who created beautiful art pieces. He was always willing to help neighbors and friends with various welding projects they needed for their properties. He enjoyed working with his hands.
Born in Denver, CO, Mike grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1971. He lived in Rio Rancho since 1980 where he maintained his property meticulously and enjoyed gardening with his wife. One of his proudest moments was seeing his youngest son retire as a United States Marine and his daughter becoming a veterinarian. He was involved with Blue Star Mothers of America, supporting troops during his son's service. He left a lasting impression on those he interacted with valuing the company of friends and caring deeply for his family. Known for storytelling and practical jokes, his memory endures.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Ayla, and two children, Marc Quintana of Albuquerque and Ayshea Marchiondo (Pasquinel) of Tracy, CA. He adored his three grandchildren Salicio, Francesca, and Santino Marchiondo. His 102-year-old mother, Mary Jane Quintana of Albuquerque, also survives him. His sister-in-law, Marsha Brown of Fort Wayne, IN, and cousin, Carla Murray (John) of Albuquerque were like sisters to him. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Quintana, and his oldest son, Michael Quintana Jr. The family appreciates the support, kindness, and compassion provided by Mike's medical team at Rust Cancer Center and the Presbyterian Hospice team during his care. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the Animal Humane Association of NM, an organization that he supported for many years.
