Nancy L. Belcher

Nancy L. Belcher, 80, of Aztec, formerly of Greeneville, Tenn., and New Martinsville, W.V., died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, in Aztec. She was born in Alcoa, Tenn., on Dec. 18, 1929, the daughter of John G. and Blanche V. Lewallen of Maryville, Tenn. Nancy attended Alcoa High School. In 1947, Nancy married Gordon “Bud” L. Belcher of Alcoa, the day after she was eighteen, in Chatsworth, Ga. Bud had just finished more than four years in the Army, stationed in Europe during his World War II duty. In 1957, they moved to New Martinsville, where they resided for 30 years. Gordon worked 27 years at Ormet Aluminum Plant. Nancy was an active member of the Steelton Church of Christ where she worked endlessly for the Lord. During this time in New Martinsville, they adopted two sons, Michael and Stephen. Gordon was a member of several Beagle clubs where he raised and trained champion beagles, while Nancy was the neighborhood Mom who shared recipes and won the hearts of many in the community. To this day, many in the old neighborhoods remember them. After the boys were grown, Bud and Nancy were foster parents to two girls in the Greeneville area. In July of 2009, Nancy and Gordon made a brave move west to Aztec, to be closer to their son, Steve and daughter-in-love, Kathy. Gordon preceded Nancy in death on Nov. 23, 2009. They were married for 62 years. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Blanche and John; brother, Bill; and sisters, Priscilla and June. She is survived by her two sons, Michael of New Martinsville, Stephen and daughter-in-law, Kathy, of Aztec; grandchildren, January Nuanez, Tiffany Ferguson, Christopher Padgett, Geoffrey Thompson, Daisha Vaughn, Cherish Skeen, Jessica and Kayla Belcher; five great-grandchildren, Kyla and Kara Ferguson, Luis and Scott Nuanez and Ethan Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 405 S. Main Ave. in Aztec. Paul Smith of Aztec Church of Christ will preside. Inurnment will be on Wednesday, March 3, at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 North Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe. A sincere and heartfelt thank you from all of us to all of you for all the help, care, faith, support and undying love that you have given to us and shown to our parents throughout their lifetime. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nancy Belcher may be made to the Tennessee Children’s Home, P.O. Box 10 Spring Hill, TN 37174.
