Obituary

Nazario Barela, age 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, on April 21, 2026. He was born on April 20, 1937, in San Mateo, New Mexico, to Reymundo and Pablita Barela.

Nazario proudly served his country in both the United States Army and the National Guard, dedicating two years to each. He carried that same sense of duty and commitment into his personal and professional life. He worked for Continental Divide Electric and was a dedicated union member for 20 years.

On May 20, 1961, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Sandoval, in Grants, New Mexico. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage filled with devotion, companionship, and countless cherished memories.

Nazario was a man of many talents and passions. A skilled welder and self-taught repairman, he could fix just about anything. He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed trips to the casino with his beloved wife. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and held a deep spiritual connection to El Santuario de Chimayo, making a pilgrimage each Easter—often walking the journey as a testament to his faith.

Known for his generous heart, Nazario was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, or anyone in need. His kindness extended beyond his immediate circle, as he was also a supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest son, Aaron Barela; his second oldest daughter, Melenie Saavedra; and his youngest son, Ryan Barela.

Nazario is survived by his grandsons, Luke Barela, Logan Barela, Kevin Saavedra, and Mathew Saavedra, all of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and Aaron Barela of Grants, New Mexico, along with extended family and loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy.

A memorial service will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services – Southern Chapel, 2400 Southern Blvd SE, Rio Rancho, New Mexico 87124, at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026.

Nazario Barela will be remembered for his strength, generosity, faith, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in all who knew and loved him.
