Ostasio Elden DeHerrera, age 85, a resident of Bernalillo, New Mexico, was born June 7, 1940, in Cuba, New Mexico, and passed away on March 29, 2026, in Bernalillo.
Elden graduated from Cuba High School in 1958 and went on to attend the University of New Mexico for two years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, holding the rank of PVT E-2 (P), and was a Vietnam War veteran. He was a member of 101 first airborne. During his service, he earned the Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle).
On August 16, 1969, Elden married the love of his life, Patricia Hill, in Bernalillo. Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage.
Elden dedicated 30 years of service to the Natural Resource Conservation Service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacobo and Juanita Gurule DeHerrera; his brother, Lalo DeHerrera; his sisters, Anna Jaramillo, Elodia Valdez, Emma Sigman, and Katie Rivera; and his brother, Willie DeHerrera.
Elden is survived by his loving wife, Patricia DeHerrera of Bernalillo, NM; his sons, Jason (Christina) DeHerrera of Bernalillo, NM, and Joseph DeHerrera of Bernalillo, NM; his grandchildren, Samatha (Oscar) DeHerrera-Rodriguez, Jaidyn DeHerrera, and Isaiah DeHerrera; and his great-grandchildren, Mateo Rodriguez, Leo Rodriguez, and Baby Girl Rodriguez on the way. He is also survived by his beloved pet, Coco.
Elden was a devoted family man who cherished his grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He was known for his stubborn nature and unique sense of humor. He was always busy working—whether in his home, his car, or doing various projects. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.
A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 301 S. Camino Del Pueblo, Bernalillo, NM 87004, followed by the Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
