Philip Doonan

Philip Doonan, 85, known affectionately as Phil to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024, in Bosque Farms, New Mexico. His journey began in Malden, Massachusetts, on December 25, 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on January 18, 1957. He served in the United States Air Force for an impressive 32 years, rising through the ranks to Major. Phil's service was distinguished by numerous accolades and decorations earned during his tenure.

Phil's commitment to education was evident through his academic achievements. After graduating from Tucson Senior High School in 1956, he pursued higher education at the University of Maryland, earning his BS in Government and Politics, a BS from the University of New Mexico in Sociology, and a MS from Ball State University in Public Administration. He later returned to the Southwest and attended the University of New Mexico, where he obtained his MS in Special Education.

 He was a beloved schoolteacher who dedicated his life to shaping young minds with care and compassion. He taught special education at Corrales Elementary and Stapleton Elementary in Rio Rancho, NM. He retired after twelve years.

In addition to his military service and teaching career, Phil was deeply involved in various volunteer organizations that focused on children's welfare and community enrichment. He generously contributed his time and efforts to the Security Police Association, Friends of the Library of Rio Rancho, VA Volunteer Services, Enchanted Vista Iris Society, Albuquerque Aril Society, Masonic Sandoval Lodge, Eastern Star, Kiwanis Club, and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Phil is proceeded in death by his mother Mona Eileen Clarke, father William Owen Doonan, sister Pam Walsh, sister Pat Frazier, brother Peter Doonan, and brother-in-law William (Bill) Hellsten.

Phil will be dearly missed by his surviving family members; his daughter Diane Kelly Doonan of Peralta, New Mexico; sister Paula Hellsten of Tucson Arizona; grandson Henry Stephen Doonan and wife Melinda Marie Madrid; granddaughter Ashlyn Renee Thompson; as well as great-grandchildren Henry Connor Doonan and Ava Harper Doonan.

A celebration of Phil's life will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services - Sara Road Chapel in Rio Rancho on March 12th followed by a gathering at the Masonic Lodge. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Santa Fe National Cemetery on March 14th.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the following organization:
