Richard Haviland Hicks

Richard H. Hicks (Dick), age 89, passed away April 30, 2012. He was born November 10, 1922, in Plainfield, New Jersey to Samuel and Marjorie Hicks. Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Smith), son, Steve, daughter Terry (Parker) Hicks, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Richard served in the Marine Corps, Fourth Division during WWII in the south Pacific and was wounded Iwo Jima. Richard and Shirley moved to Albuquerque in 1952. They first lived in the Hoffmantown area then moved the Southwest Valley. In 1972,they moved to Cedar Crest in the East Mountains where they designed and built two unique mountain homes. Richard was a well-known artesian in a number of genres including; a maker of Kentucky flintlock rifles, western sculpture, candles, and 18th century printing presses. He was recognized in numerous publications. The December1956 New Mexico Magazine featured his Kentucky Flintlock rifles. In 2005 he was included in the"Lasting Impressions exhibit at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe for his Bobcat Press. Richard has also been an important mentor to young artists and artisans, some of whom have achieved national attention. Richard was a founding board member of the All Faiths Receiving Home in Albuquerque. His family asks that donations be made in his name to this important foundation.
