Robert Eugene Gabriel

May 22, 1929 — November 28, 2018

Age 89, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018. He was born in Champaign, Il., on May 22,
1929, to Frank and Marian Gabriel. He moved to Albuquerque with his parents in 1938 and graduated
from Albuquerque High School in 1947. He worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. as a certified
public accountant for more than 20 years, and his clients included the Navajo Reservation and New
Mexico governors. In 1972 he joined the Bank of New Mexico (First Interstate Bank) as chief financial
officer and senior vice president. He followed in his parents' footsteps of giving back to the community
by serving on several boards including the Better Business Bureau, United Way, and UNM's Maxwell
Museum. He retired in 1988 to pursue private ventures. Bob's interests ranged from travel and
photography to hot-rodding and gunsmithing to computer programming and genealogy. He had a vital
curiosity in cultural history and often packed the family in the car to visit ruins, Spanish missions, or
grand landscapes. A revered patriarch, he was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Alice of 64 years; his children Kathryn Gabriel Loving and her husband
David, Janet Gabriel, Robert Randall Gabriel and his wife Patricia, and Matthew Gabriel and his wife
Saundra; his grandchildren Andrew Gabriel, Jessica Gabriel and her husband Robert Lefebvre, Kaitlin
Gabriel-Flauta and her husband George, and Jacob Gabriel; his step great-grandchildren Sabriel and
Kimiko Flauta; and numerous granddogs including Sophie, Reagan, and Trigger.
