Ruth B. Chavez

August 19, 1931 — February 9, 2017

Chavez, Ruth B.
Age 85, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017. She was born in La Joya, NM on August 19, 1931, to Pedro and Maria Aragon Baca. Ruth was a woman of great faith. She loved time with her family and her grandchildren. She liked to embroider sheets, crossword puzzles and turtles. Edna remembered when  mom would swing a stick over a snakes head, made it dizzy, then would whack it on the head. They always reminisced about taking sheep to the hills early in the morning. And how the kids would have mom make bloomers for them so they could get tortillas. They would wet the tortillas, put salt on one side and sugar on the other--Good lunch! Brei's memory was when mom would get the well pump going and Edna would go inside the house, take her clothes off and run real fast and get under water so no one could see her, then it was Ruth's turn. Richard remembered the story's of how mom had him when she was seven months pregnant. They thought she was going to die, so they  made plans to give Richard to aunt Ida, Ruth said "No, that's my baby, I'll take care of him" and she did. They called him her picho. And Louie's memory was how mom always had to have a bite of his sandwich. She said " Como come Sambroso Louie". Ruth was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard R. Chavez; son, Daniel G. Chavez; sister, Edna Zaman; son-in-law, Gilbert Gonzales; and grandson, Elias Chavez. Ruth is survived by her loving and devoted children, Kathy Gonzales, Joyce Chavez, Janice Baca and husband Ted, Steven Chavez and wife Patricia, Alice Belmontez and husband David, Anthony Chavez and wife Susan and Carlos Chavez and wife Virginia; brothers, Tomas Baca and wife Mary, Johnny Baca, Brei Baca and wife, Hermie, and Richard Baca and wife Sylvia: sisters, Miriam Armijo and husband Louie and Lida Manning; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
