Ruth Weichbrodt

December 3, 1927 — December 6, 2021

Ruth Prottengeier Weichbrodt.  December 3, 1927 - December 6, 2021

Ruth Prottengeier Weichbrodt passed away after a long illness at the age of 94 on December 8, 2021. She is survived by her children Lisa and her husband, Steve; Christine and her husband, Ronald; and David; her grandchildren David, Ben, Michael, Matthew, and Kathryn; and her great grandchildren Emery, Anna, and Felix.

Born on December 3, 1927, she was raised in Swanville, Minnesota by her father and grandmother, as her mother passed in childbirth. Ruth was an independent woman who lived her life to the fullest. She sang in St. Olaf’s renowned choir and went on to teach music professionally. After a divorce, she bravely moved with her three young kids from Minneapolis to Tohatchi, New Mexico, to teach music on the Navajo reservation (Dinétah). Despite no previous ties to the area, she was welcomed by the Diné, and spent nearly three decades teaching there before retiring to Albuquerque. Her love for music still reverberates throughout her students', children's and grandchildren's hearts. While she was traveled and adventurous, she recognized the adventure in every day. A recognition that was unmistakable in her hearty, irreverent laugh. She was a teacher by profession, but she taught the most by how she lived - happy, joyous, and free. Lessons that will carry on for generations to come.

As the Diné saying goes, she walked in beauty.

Details on her celebration of life will be released within the next few weeks.
