Sandra Simone Rice was born in Brooklyn, New York to George and Marie Rice, on March 29, 1947. Sandra was the eldest of two daughters. Sandra’s love of her life is her only child, Jamal Rice who she cherished with her heart and soul.
Sandra was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 43 years. She was initiated on June 16, 1972 at the University of New Mexico - Eta Iota Chapter. Sandra joined the Albuquerque Alumnae Chapter where she served as President and worked on several committees. She was a proud Delta and embodied all that they stood for. She also loved the regal symbolism of the elephant. She displayed them proudly until her death.
Sandra was an inquisitive woman. She attended school at the University of New Mexico and the Technical Vocational Institute that is now the Central New Mexico Community College. She valued knowledge and spent many years exploring various subjects which included her study of the bible. She was an avid reader and gladly shared her materials with anyone who showed an interest.
Sandra attended several churches in Albuquerque which included New Hope Full Gospel Baptist Church, Calvary and others before finally adopting Phillips Chapel CME church. Sandra served in the Women’s ministry at Phillips Chapel where God used her knowledge of the bible to aide others in attaining a closer walk with the Lord.
Sandra Simone Rice surrendered to God’s call to come home and take her final rest on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 4:20 pm, after a yearlong illness for which there was no earthly cure. Sandra was preceded in death by both of her parents, George and Marie Rice, and her beloved sister, Colleen. She leaves to mourn her leaving, her son, Jamal Rice of Albuquerque, NM, some special cousins, Sherrie (ReRe) Rose Smith-Miller of Euless, Texas, Odessa Jones of South Carolina, Beverly Cooney of South Carolina, Marlene Hicks of South Carolina and many other relatives, many dedicated friends to include, E. Lena Brown, Margaret Cheeks, Vodra Dorn, Odessa McClain, Tanda Meadors, Judith Smalls, Terry Stamps, Brenda Steele, Camille Williams plus many more.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:45 PM on Friday, July 17, 2015, Phillips Chapel CME Church, 1401 Edith Blvd SE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. (505) 242-4617
