Sergeant Michael Barrett Schlattman, affectionately known as "Schlatty", tragically passed away on February 23, 2026, while serving in the line of duty. Born on March 2, 1973, in San Antonio, Texas, to James Lee and LeAnn Clare Schlattman, Michael spent part of his childhood in England, where his father was stationed with the Air Force.
He was a proud graduate of William H. Taft High School in San Antonio, Class of 1992, and later obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at San Antonio on December 18, 1999. Michael commenced his law enforcement career in San Antonio before moving to Austin, where he worked in Probation and Parole. His journey continued to Missoula, Montana, and ultimately led him to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, he joined the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office on April 16, 2012, and was promoted to Sergeant on July 13, 2024. Throughout his career, he served the community in various capacities, including his roles as a detective in Special Investigations and Auto Theft, and as a task force officer with the United States Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. At the time of his passing, Sergeant Schlattman was dedicated to his duties in the East Mountains.
Michael cherished the times spent traveling with his parents and celebrating holidays in San Antonio. He shared a special bond with his father, who introduced him to the joys of flying in private aircraft.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, LeAnn Schlattman. Michael is survived by his father, James Lee Schlattman and his wife, Mary Ann of San Antonio, TX; his sister Stacia Ann Fazzaro and brother-in-law Peter John Fazzaro of Jackson, NJ; his fiancée Tara Flynn-Tedder of Albuquerque, NM and her children, Corbin and Maddie, both of Texas; and his cherished pet dog, Sadie.
Outside of his professional life, Michael found joy in working out, hiking, traveling, going to the movies, and spending quality time with family and friends.
His sister, Stacia, reflected on their deep connection, stating: "Mike was my very best friend. We talked and texted all of the time. We shared everything with each other, and we leaned on one another for help, strength, encouragement, advice, and support. Oftentimes, we knew what we were thinking without saying a word. And when we spoke around others, they often struggled to understand us, like we had our own language. Mike had such an amazing soul, and he worked very hard for everything he achieved and accomplished. If you were lucky enough to know him, he was the nicest, funniest and most loving guy and made everyone laugh; he had a great outlook and perspective in life. I will be forever lost without my brother and he was taken from us way too soon."
Mike, I love you with every ounce of my being!
Rest in Peace my sweet brother.
