Sonja Adams

Sonja Marcene (Swanson) Adams, 81, passed away suddenly on September 24, 2019. Her Celebration of Life will be held at Daniel’s Family funeral Home at the Sara Chapel on September 30th. Viewing will be from 11 AM to 1 PM. Service will be at 1 PM, with a short graveside service directly following.

Sonja was born on the family farm on December 11, 1937, the second of four daughters to Harold and Beatrice Swanson, in Rowena, South Dakota. Sonja grew up with her sisters on the family farm, graduated from Valley Springs High School in Valley Springs, South Dakota, and went to beautician’s school. Sonja relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota soon after graduating and worked as a Beautician for a prestigious salon in the Lake Calhoun neighborhood of Minneapolis.

After marrying Norman Adams in 1966, the couple relocated to Albuquerque, where they became residents of the fledgling Westside. Sonja and Norm raised their three children in Albuquerque, and were active community members of Paradise Hills, and founding members of All Saints Lutheran and Cross of Hope Lutheran Church. Sonja was passionate about nutrition, and studied continually to learn how to “heal thy self.” Her faith in Jesus Christ saw Sonja through the ups and downs that life hands to us. She would often say, “I pray and Jesus tells me what I am supposed to do next.” Sonja was active in several women’s prayer fellowships and Special Olympics with her son with special needs. Sonja is survived by her sisters Charlotte Oviatt of Minneapolis, MN, Yvonne Liljgren of Sioux Falls, SD, daughter, Kristen Adams (Denver, CO), sons Kenneth (Lori Ann) Adams, and Kevin Adams, and two grandchildren, Olivia and Zephania Adams.
