Stephen R. Hay has been a resident of Albuquerque NM since October of 2000. He passed to his Heavenly home on 02/06/2023 and his wife Palmira Perea-Hay was by his side. Stephen was born in Cannelton, Indiana on February 24, 1938, his parents were Jim and Verna Hay, 2 sisters that passed before Stephen was born. He has a surviving brother Gary Hay of Leopold Indiana, Nephew Erik Hay of Denver Co. and two nieces Stephanie and Jessica Hay of Indiana.
Steve had an early education in Cannelton where he enjoyed playing basketball. He never lost his basketball skills. He earned two master’s degrees from Catholic University of America in Washington DC. After completion of his master’s degree he joined St. James Father's out of Boston Massachusetts and spent 6 years in Bolivia and Indianapolis ministering. When he earned his degree in Social Work, he spent a majority of his work in Catholic Charities Agencies with his wife Palmira. Steve and Palmira have been ASSOCIATES of VICTORY NOLL FOR 30 YEARS.
In 1982 Palmira and Steve worked as volunteers for Social Services (VESS) in Lubbock, Texas. Steve was the director for the agency for 18 years. In 2000 Steve and his wife moved to Albuquerque, NM and worked for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe for 8 years. They worked in the office of Pastoral Outreach which included services for people with disabilities, prison and jail ministries and services for seniors. Steve loved serving the Spanish speakers, he continued his services in English, Spanish and Sign Language.
Steve and Palmira had the privilege of Palimira’s sister reside with them in Virginia and Lubbock. Rosa was special from birth as she was deaf and in the last 14 years of her life, she was deaf-blind. The Perea family is grateful for the time that Rosa spent with Steve and Palmira.
Steve was kind, compassionate, funny, joy filled and smart and he left a positive impression on all people that he encountered including friends, family and strangers.
In Lieu of flowers Palmira and Steve would appreciate donations to Catholic Charities of Archdiocese of Santa Fe and or Lubbock TX.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Daniels Family Funeral Services Carlisle Chapel. 3113 Carlisle Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110
Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 9am at St. Josephs on the Rio Grande Catholic Church. 5901 St Josephs Dr NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120 followed by a Graveside service at Mount Calvary Cemetery. 1900 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102
