Stephen James Howden

Stephen James Howden, 56, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Stephen was the son of James and Maryann Howden. He dedicated his life to helping others through his work as a school counselor and mental health therapist. Stephen graduated from Bernalillo High School in 1988. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1995, a Master’s degree from New Mexico Highlands University in 2003, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Phoenix in 2017.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Dina Howden, with whom he shared 13 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his mother, Maryann Howden; his son, Brandon Howden; and four stepsons.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Howden, and his stepson, Henry Wisen.

Stephen had a big heart and was known for his caring and compassionate nature. He loved music and attending concerts, enjoyed sports, and especially cherished spending time with his friends. He lived a life centered around helping others and creating meaningful connections with the people around him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2903 Cabezon Road, Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
