Stephen Alan Spaulding

November 11, 1939 — January 1, 2015

Spaulding, Stephen Alan

Artist, craftsman, designer, engineer, builder, sailor, world traveler, and beloved husband and father celebrated the new year 2015 by embarking on his final journey on Thursday, January 1, 2015. He was born November 11, 1939, the only child of Ken and Bess Spaulding.

Steve grew up in Connecticut and Massachusetts, attending a one room school house in Union. CT, high school in nearby Stafford Springs, CT, and prep school at Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts. He joined the Army in 1959; stationed in Boeblingen, Germany and trained as an auto mechanic and rifle expert. Because he saw no wartime action, he went skiing at every opportunity. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Lahore, Pakistan in 1964. Upon returning from Pakistan, he attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where he lived during the 1970's and worked at the Metropolitan Museum as an objects conservator. Steve also free-lanced as a woodworker and cabinet maker. He made displays and mounts for art gallery and museum installations including the Smithsonian Institute and an exhibit of arms and armor from the Tower of London, displayed in Williamsburg, VA. His later work, which included furniture, cabinets, display cases, can be seen in many shops and galleries in Santa Fe, as well as in many private homes in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Placitas, NM. Steve collected and restored vintage British sports cars including  1960 Austin Healy Sprite now owned by his son, Dylan.
Steve is survived by his wife of 35 years, Linda Spaulding (Lasswell); son, Dylan Spaulding; step-son, Oliver Westerfield, and is sorely missed by his loyal dog, Simon.

A Private Family Memorial Service will be held.
