Thomas George Hartman, age 83, passed away on June 26, 2017. He was born to Myron Daniel Hartman and Ruth Ellen Hartman on April 17, 1934 in Barton, NY, but grew up in his beloved village of Owego, NY.
After graduating from Owego Free Academy, he served four years in the US Air Force. Tom attended the University of SW Louisiana in Lafayette, majoring in psychology. He married Gail Chachere in 1961. After working for Dun and Bradstreet in New Orleans, he returned to Owego, working as a social worker, and at Newark State School in Newark, NY. He received a Master’s Degree in Special Education at the University of Scranton.
In 1964 he moved to Albuquerque and was employed in the Albuquerque Public Schools, also doing doctoral work at UNM. He worked for NM Division of Vocational Rehabilitation there and in Roswell, NM. He served as president of the Association of Retarded Citizens and was a member of the Optimist Club. For five years he was on the faculty at Eastern New Mexico University, and in 1976 moved to Hobbs to teach for 20 years with Hobbs Municipal Schools.
He was active at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry, and co-chairing with his wife the annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner for 17 years. He volunteered at a weekly service for residents at Good Samaritan Village, where later he was employed. He was a board member of the Hobbs Salvation Army. The family were volunteers in the Shelter Bed Program for displaced children. In retirement and living abroad he volunteered in Lancashire, England, at a home for developmentally disabled men.
Returning to the US, the Hartman’s lived in Belen, NM, where he served on the board for Valencia County Shelter Bed Program and regularly attended St. Philips Episcopal Church. In 2001, they moved to Albuquerque where he was active in Hope in the Desert Episcopal Church, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Hope Men’s Bible Study, and a homeless ministry. Tom was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed Lobo basketball and football games.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gail, three children, and six grandchildren; Ellen Kemp and her husband Chase of Las Cruces, Kirby and Kendra Kemp; Mark Hartman of Albuquerque and Elliott and Warren Hartman; and Eric Hartman of Sewanee, TN, and his wife Lisa, and Sophia and Harrison Hartman.
Tom was known for his kind heart, his optimistic outlook, and his love of people in general, but particularly for those who were disabled, to whom he gave so much during his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Hope in the Desert Episcopal Church, 8700 Alameda Blvd. NE.
