Vernon Mathew Clark, lovingly known as Vern, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on December 6, 2025, surrounded by the family who cherished him deeply. After a courageous two-year battle with cancer, he left this world the way he lived his life—with strength, love, unwavering grace, and a great sense of humor.
Vern was born on February 18, 1945, in Colville, Washington, to Chester M. Clark and Clara M. Boyd. A proud veteran, he honorably served as a sergeant in the 825th Strategic Aerospace Division of the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968.
On August 19, 1977, he married the love of his life, Ruby Lucy Salazar, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Together, they built a life full of devotion, laughter, and memories, sharing 40 beautiful years of marriage before her passing.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his son, Anthony; his parents; his brothers, Chester Jr., Ronald, and Charles; and his sisters, Lois, Eileen, Lucy, Sandra, and Stephanie, all of whom he now rejoins in eternal peace.
Though preceded by many, Vern leaves behind a legacy that continues through the loved ones who survive him: his children, Donnietta Hays and her husband, Justin, and Vernon Clark II; his brothers, James and Ernie; his sisters, Carol, Jeannie, Linda, and Angel; and his many grandchildren—Selena, Serenity, Xavier, Jade, Jenna, Jewel, Sheyenne, Sierra, Antoniamarie, Andraya, and Anthony Clark II. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren.
Vern was a steady presence, a quiet hero, and the kind of man whose wisdom and warmth made people feel safe, seen, and cared for. His sense of humor, his resilience, and his deep love for his family will continue to guide those who knew him. His absence leaves an ache that can never be filled, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
A viewing will be held on Friday, December 19, from 10:00–11:00 AM at Daniels Family Funeral Services – Southern Chapel, 2400 Southern Blvd. in Rio Rancho. Funeral services will follow from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location. Following the service, the family will travel to Santa Fe for burial at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, with military graveside services beginning at 1:30 PM and concluding at 2:00 PM.
The family would like to thank all who supported Vern during his illness, offering prayers, love, and comfort. Arrangements are under the care of Daniels Family Funeral Services.
8 We are confident, I say. And would prefer to be away from the body and and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 2 Corinthians 5:8 - 9 NIV
