Vivian Patricia McFadden was born into the union of Leroy and Queen Esther Washington McFadden. She was raised alongside her brother, James Leroy McFadden, and her beloved adopted sister, Lisa McFadden.


Vivian was educated at Tomlinson High School in Kingstree, South Carolina, and later graduated from Claflin University.


A lifelong scholar and woman of faith, Vivian pursued higher education with remarkable dedication. She earned a Master of Divinity and a Master of Religious Education from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She also received a Master of Arts in Language Arts from Norfolk State University, as well as a Master of Arts in Communications and two additional Master of Arts degrees from Old Dominion University.


Vivian made history as the first woman ordained as a full Elder in the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was also the first Black woman commissioned in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps, paving the way for future generations through her faith, courage, and leadership.


Beyond her historic achievements and lifelong service, Vivian took great pride in her family. She is survived by her children, Pedro, Maykel, and Margarita McFadden; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.


Vivian Patricia McFadden’s life was a testament to faith, education, service, and perseverance. Her legacy of leadership, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
