Streamside I stood, fly rod in hand, Casting the fly and watched it land. For a moment it paused, then moved on, Oer mossy rocks and trees long down. Swirling and twirling thru eddy and riffle, Nary a trout did give it a sniffle. Retrieving the line, I cast once more, Further and closer to the other shore. It floated a moment and then went under, For a trout had made its greatest blunder. Taking the fly and feeling its sting It zigged and zagged and began jumping. I fought it to shore, then released the fly And watched the rainbow swim away. My hand reached down to old Pokes head, Eyes, not on me, but were instead Fixed on a doe, which silently stood In the cooling shade of yonder wood. Flaring nostrils drinking in our scent, A quick right turn and away she went. Youre gone now, Poke and I had to stay. Wait for me, Ill again come your way. What a day. What a day. What a day.
