Daniel T. Boxrud

August 27, 1934 — October 23, 2019

Daniel T. Boxrud, 85, of Albuquerque, passed away October 23, 2019. He was born August 27, 1934 in Detroit, the son of James and Alma (Laforest) Boxrud. He attended St. Paul’s Catholic School in Grosse Pointe, where he was involved in the children’s choir and first discovered his love of singing. In 1947, the family moved to Brooklyn, Michigan and Daniel distinguished himself in Marching Band, where he was the drum major. He graduated in 1952, and in 1957 was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, where he served as a clerk and was introduced to the kind of equipment that later piqued his interest in computer programming, which would be his career for many years to come. Daniel also was part of the Army Chorus. After his discharge, Daniel worked for a number of companies and school districts. On July 20, 1963, he married Joanne Grey in Belleville, Michigan. Daniel and Joanne lived in Colorado, California, and later returned to southeast Michigan, where they resided until Joanne’s death July 13, 2004. In the summer of 2005, Daniel relocated to Albuquerque, where he sang with the Albuquerque Civic Chorus and the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus.  He was a volunteer for Albuquerque Pride and was honored as Grand Marshal of the 2018 Albuquerque Pride Parade. Daniel leaves behind many friends and family members in Albuquerque, Colorado, and Michigan to remember his sense of humor, love for music, and genuine joy in living.

Daniel is survived by: his partner, Stephen Scalf of Albuquerque; a stepson, Charles (Mary) Grey of Ft. Myers, Florida; two sisters, Carol Bennett of Clinton Township, Michigan and Ricki Boxrud of Canton, Michigan; a brother, James (Liz) Boxrud of Wiggins, Mississippi; 25 nieces and nephews; and 50 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: a sister, Norma Lapham, who died March 6, 2019; a nephew, Kim Bennett , who died in 1970; and a niece Carol Lapham, who died in 2002.
