David Lee Otero, 72, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.  He was born on March 4, 1948 in Taos, NM, to his parents, Rudolph F. Otero and Fannie (Struck) Otero.  David was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rudy Otero, Jr., his sister Margaret Ann Otero-Keiser, and his previous wife, Dorinda (Martinez) Otero.  He is survived by his wife, Lorraine G. Otero, his son, Kevin J. Otero, and his sister, Rosalie C. Otero all of Albuquerque, NM.  Survivors also include stepchildren Audrey Garcia, Gina Garcia-Chavez (Gerri), Vincent Garcia, Krista Martinez, and Ryan Ambrose all of Albuquerque, NM, and Gabriella Wood (Jeff) and Gina Angel Pollack-Moxley (Tom) of Lakeside, CA.  Surviving grandchildren include Gavin Garcia of Albuquerque, NM, and step-grandchildren Michael Wood, Monte-Angel Richardson and Skyler Moxley of Lakeside, CA.  David is also survived by his beloved nephews and nieces, Michael A. Otero, Carlos J. Otero, and Andrea E. Otero-Benoit all of Denver, CO, Jefferey M. Naranjo of Española, NM, Anna C. Peralta and Jeremy Keiser (Lisa) of Albuquerque, NM, and Derrick Keiser (Leticia) of North East Harbor, MD.

David, a.k.a. “Bull,” grew up in Española, NM, and was active in Little League and an accomplished high school athlete playing baseball, basketball, and football for the Española Valley High School Hornets.  He was named Best Athlete during his senior year in 1966.  After graduating high school, David studied history, political science, and pre-law at the University of Arizona and graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1971.  His professional career was spent as a Bureau Chief for the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department and as the County Director for the New Mexico Human Services Department where he retired from in 2009.

David loved sports and attended numerous sporting events from the New Mexico state basketball tournaments to the NCAA men’s basketball tournaments, NFL games, MLB games, Albuquerque Isotopes games and he held season tickets for UNM men’s basketball and football for decades.  He was a true fan of top-notch athletes and coaches and admired Vince Lombardi, Knute Rockne, Johnny Unitas, Earl Campbell, Joe Montana, Tom Brady and Muhammad Ali to name a few.  David enjoyed doing genealogy research on his family tracing his ancestors to the 12th century.  He also liked spending afternoons at the horse races, going to concerts, visiting with family, and maintaining close friendships with his many Española Hornets classmates.  David was a kind, thoughtful, and generous husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Due to the pandemic, the family will have a small funeral service and burial and plans to have a bigger, more-deserving celebration of David’s life when we can all gather safely.  Thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.
