Edna Louise Smith

June 1, 1938 — February 13, 2020

Edna Louise Smith, age eighty-one (81) was born June 1, 1938 to the late Mr. Ruben Barrs, Sr., and Mrs. Willie Frank in Crockett Texas.  She was one of one of eight children.  She departed this life at home on Thursday, February 13, 2020.   She is preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers-Cyeal Sambo, Barrs, Franklin Benjamin Barrs, Ruben Barrs, Jr., Karry R. Barrs, Ollie Ray Barrs, and Robert Ray Barrs; one sister-Martha Mae Dillard; husband Ittris Moses Smith; great nephew Shane Barrs, and great-niece LaCresia C Dillard. 
In 1965 she worked for Teledyne and in March 1964, she married her sweetheart Ittris Smith and moved to Albuquerque in 1969, during this union they raised 5 children, son, Ray (Maxine), nieces, Twila and Alicia, and nephews, Charles, and Jacques and her sister-in-law Joyce Barrs.  After moving to Albuquerque Edna began working at the Albuquerque Job Corp as a Residential Assistant (RAA) until her retirement in 1999.  There she was known as Momma Smitty.  She was a unique, stern and gifted woman and the impact of her life will be left and shared by many.  She was a long-time and faithful member of the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Mahalia Jackson No. 10.    
 Edna was a great daughter, sister, mother, auntie, great-auntie and she loved all her children. She was the true matriarch of the family and the glue that held them all together.  She loved to cook and her family’s favorites were steak and potatoes with onions, pork chops cream corn and pickled beets, pound cake, peach cobbler and their favorite pig eating cake that she loved to cook for them every holiday.  She loved to travel and saw many parts of the world.   After she became sick, she loved to just go for rides in the car just so that she could get out the house.  After she was unable to get out like she wanted to she loved to listen to the blues and gospel music.  
She is survived by her children, and a host of grand, and great-nieces and nephews; and her best friend Barbara Jones.
