Erika Love

May 2, 1925 — October 8, 2020

Erika Love passed away on October 8, 2020 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at home surrounded by people who loved her. She was 95 and lived a full life. She grew up in Germany and moved to the United States where she studied library science at the University of Indiana. She became director of the medical library at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She also worked at the National Library of Medicine and served as president of the Medical Library Association (MLA). When interviewed for an MLA oral history, Erika described how she enjoyed being present at the beginning of new areas of librarianship, a career about which she said “ I have never been bored and always found fascinating.”

In her personal life, she loved cooking, gardening, music, travel, her dogs and made the most of every day.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Love.

She is survived by her close friend and companion Cecile Quintal, and a large extended family including Nancy Burgeson, Larry Love, Toni Horst, Ardetta Barris, Sheila Jolivette, and Paul, James and David Buckley.

The family thanks Liz Jones and the kind and skilled doctors and nurses at Kindred Hospice who helped care for Erika in her later years.
