Harold E. Amidon

April 24, 1921 — June 4, 2022

On June 4, 2022, Harold E. Amidon a husband, father, friend, and neighbor passed away peacefully at the age of 101. He was born in New Hampshire to the late Perley and Bertha Amidon on April 24, 1921. As a child, his father taught him to farm, hunt, and fish, all serving as sources of sustenance for the family. He loved to play baseball and had a good pitching arm.  Harold married the love of his life Sophie in January of 1942. They were happily married for 73 years.

Harold was inducted into the US Army in September of 1942 after his marriage to Sophie. His foreign service was in North Africa and Italy during World War II where he earned the rank of sergeant. He and his unit were given R & R in Italy on the Isle of Capri where he, while raised Christian, was baptized into the Catholic faith as Sophie was Catholic. He eventually returned to the USA on the Issac Sharpless and was honorably discharged in November 1945.

Harold and Sophie moved from New Hampshire to Gloversville where he had been offered employment in the textile industry. Harold being of sharp mind was able to successfully fix machinery that others had been unable to which earned him a promotion. At his job in a supervisory position, he was able to work with the local employment office to help employ others. As the mill where he worked began to experience challenges he worked in the industry in Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine. He remained working in the textile industry for more than 30 years. He also earned a real estate broker’s license.

In 1951 Harold and Sophie had a daughter, Constance whom they loved dearly. Harold served as a lector at his church and a term as president of the men’s club of his daughter’s high school. He later referred to his time with his wife and daughter growing up as his blue heaven.

In their seventies, Harold and Sophie moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico to be near their daughter.  Harold worked for Dillard’s selling men’s suits where he worked into his 80s. When his wife began to have health issues, he decided to no longer work so that he was able to dedicate his time to her care. He then stayed home with his wife and their dog Lucky.  He was a caretaker for Sophie until her death in 2015.

During his years in Rio Rancho, he made friends with many people including Larry, Laurie, and their families.  He remained in his own home through his 100th birthday in 2021. The Mayor of Rio Rancho issued a proclamation for his 100th birthday and there was a drive-by parade celebration during the time of COVD-19. People often commented on how mentally sharp he was for being 100 years old. In late 2021 his health declined and he sold his home and moved into a small private care home located by his daughter.  He celebrated his 101st birthday with 19 friends at his favorite restaurant Joe’s Pasta House. However, by late May his heath deteriorated  significantly and he passed away peacefully.

Harold was a kind and gentle man who loved his family. He was someone you could count on and a friend to all who met him. He lived a long and happy life filled with many blessings.

In his memory of Harold please be kind to each other.
