James (Jim) Neil McLaughlin of Corrales, NM
Died peacefully, October 28, 2017, at Presbyterian Rust Memorial Center in Rio Rancho, NM. Born March 17, 1945, in Charlotte, MI., Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sheila (Ortego) McLaughlin; sisters Margaret Lee (Roy) Sjoberg, Indian River, MI., Judith Anne Waterman, Mooresville, NC., and brother Fredric Lee McLaughlin, Lansing, MI., 1 step-daughter,Shannon Schreiber, as well as 3 nieces, 3 nephews, 6 great nieces, and 4 great nephews. He is also lovingly remembered by his ex-wife Sally and her children Mike and Rebecca Mulligan.

Jim grew up in Vermontville, MI. finishing his high school years in Charlotte, MI., graduating in 1963. He received his Master’s degree in Finance from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI.
He began his career in the banking industry before moving to Colorado in the early 70’s. His professional career included working for Governor Lamb in Colorado; the Board of Educational Finance in Santa Fe; UNM Comptroller assigned to the athletic department; work with the Auraria Higher Education Center in Denver, CO.; service as Bursar at UNM; Vice President for Administration (VPA) for San Juan College in Farmington, NM., and service as VPA and President at Santa Fe Community College. He also had post-retirement assignments as a VPA at Alamo Community College in San Antonio, TX. and Aims Community College in Greeley, CO.
Jim’s awards and achievements include: Community College Business Officers Regional award for Top Business Officer in the region of AZ, CO, UT, NM., Outstanding Chief Business Officer for Alamo Community College District, for distinguished service to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, and an Excellence Award for outstanding service to the employees of the Alamo Community College District; he was also awarded an Honorary Associate’s Degree in Environmental Technology by the Santa Fe Community College.  He was recently recognized by the Village of Corrales for helping to found the Village’s recycling program in the early 2000s, and he has played a key role as Board and Committee member for the Pueblo los Cerros Condo Association, working to improve the wastewater management system for the community.
Jim’s passions: Helping underserved students through higher education, Bluegrass music, renovating older homes, canoeing, camping, and hiking, cross-country skiing, travel, archeology, Red Wings hockey, the Tigers, and virtually all other sports. He played basketball in high school and his early college years, crossing paths with some of the greats. He averaged 15 plus rebounds per game while playing for Michigan State University.
