Partridge, Lloyd Donald (“Don”) died at home on 22 August 2017 surrounded by his cherished family. Dedicated family man, fine teacher, and passionate outdoorsman, Don derived great joy and satisfaction from his relationships with his wife and three daughters and their families, from several generations of students that he taught, and from skiing, kayaking, and hiking. He eagerly embraced the possibilities of creating a “greener” world, adding a greenhouse, low-water-use plants, a hot water on demand system, and pv panels to his home, and everyone who knew him recognized the recumbent bicycle he rode to work every day until the last few weeks of his life.
Don received his undergraduate degree from MIT and his doctorate from the University of Washington. After post-doctoral work in Bristol, England and at Friday Harbor, WA, he accepted a teaching and research position at the University of New Mexico Medical School, where he taught for over 40 years. To be sure, he was well regarded for his research, but he truly shone as a mentor to graduate students in neuroscience. An award was established in his name, the Partridge Prize, and every year a fortunate student receives funds through it to attend the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
Don is survived by his wife, Susan; three daughters, Erika, Daniella and her husband Jeff, and Rachel and her husband Kenneth; his brother, David; his sister, Gayle and her husband Raymond; an uncle, John and his wife Virginia; an aunt, Beverly and her husband Fred; an aunt, May, ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, 14 October 2017 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM.
