Thom Allan Stein

Thom Stein, athletic adventurer and successful Albuquerque businessman, passed away July 2, 2019. He was 63. Thom combined his love of people with his life-long passion for European automobiles when he opened Auto Shoppe Import Sales in 1994. He was fond of the relationships he built with clients over many years, selling to several generations of families and friends.

Thom came to Albuquerque from Alhambra, CA in 1975, two years out of high school. Competitive and fearless, having grown up as a gymnast, skier and cyclist, he later took on extreme scuba and even sky-diving. Ultimately he became a triathlete, adopted a very technical approach to training, and competed in 4 Ironman Triathlons and 17 Half Ironman Triathlons, including the World Championship in Queensland, Australia in 2016.

In February 2017 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Even then, after chemo and radiation therapy, he traveled to Europe, married his long-time friend Barbara Rivers in Paris, and completed the fearsome cycling climb up Alpe d’Huez, (commonly a stage in the Tour de France).

Thom is survived by his wife, Barbara Rivers; his brothers, Ernie and Bill Stein; his niece, nephew and their families; his step son and daughter and their families. He will be missed by his many friends.

All are invited to a memorial service at Daniel’s Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming NE, Friday, July 26 at 11 AM.
