Virginia McGiboney

March 16, 1923 — April 27, 2021

Virginia McGiboney passed away peacefully at the age of 98, on April 27, 2021.  Born in Boston on March 16, 1923 to immigrant parents Simon (Jeghelian) Jay and Margaret Bradford, the oldest of three children.

She married David R. McGiboney Jr. in Boston in 1945. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Albuquerque where they both earned degrees from UNM in 1950.  They had four children – Joan Scott, Linda White, Ken McGiboney, and Scot McGiboney (d. 2000). When all the kids were in school, Virginia returned to UNM for her teachers certificate and taught fifth grade at Acoma Elementary School until she retired.

During her retirement, Virginia found great joy in travel, visiting all 7 continents and reliving her trips with her family through photo albums of her adventures.  She adored her grandchildren, who lovingly called her Nana and she shared her love of travel with them by taking them on weekend getaways.

Virginia was an avid golfer and encouraged everyone to play. Her grandkids and great grandkids have many fond memories of playing golf and putt-putt with her. She was a dedicated walker and could frequently be found walking Coronado mall to get her steps in.

In addition to her three living children, she is survived by five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Virginia will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe with David (d. 1969). A private memorial service will be held later this summer for the family.
