I miss you, Dad.

I miss your laugh, your jokes, your too-strong coffee, your text messages, the way you always called me when you were on walks with Blaze. I miss going with you on those walks and sitting with the two of you afterwards in your thinking spot. I miss talking to you about work and watching tv with you, the way you got hooked on random music and theology documentaries. I miss our father-daughter dates to bookstores and art galleries. I miss receiving stacks of books from you for Christmas and my birthday, not because of the books themselves, but because you chose each and every one for me, and they were always perfect.

I miss the way you reminded me to take my vitamins and hang the car keys in their place. I miss sending you my translations, sharing poems with you, and sharing articles about how trees communicate. I miss the way you kept my plant alive while I lived in Boston, and drew a thousand sketches of it, and let me pick which sketches I wanted to keep from the pile.

Most of all, I miss waking up every morning and knowing that, no matter what else was happening in life, I had you. I had the two most amazing sisters, the kindest and most caring mom, the sweetest collie, and the most outstanding, protective, loving dad. I started typing here just to say I miss you-- but the rest of the words came, because every moment you gave us was too beautiful, the love you gave us was too much. It spills out.

You were my anchor and I loved you. I do love you. I will love you, now and always.

Your Yayi, your little ray of sunshine

I am saddened to hear of the passing of such a great man and professor . I had taken courses with Dr. Rivera in the past and in my first semester back to school, Professor Rivera encouraged me to believe in myself and apply for the program. I too lost my grandfather this holiday season and while the pain doesn't go away seeing and hearing about the legacy of such great men encourages me to move pass the grief. My deepest condolences to the Rivera Family and UNM family.

I had the privilege of knowing Mario for 15 years, first as a student, later as a colleague and finally as a friend.

Mario had a passion for education, especially for those from less fortunate backgrounds. He often went the extra mile to help a student with their Professional Paper, assisting them in admission to the MPA Program and even after graduation, into doctoral programs and other academic and professional pursuits.

Mario was a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and he could always be counted on to support students.

He will be remembered fondly and he will be greatly missed.

The passing of Dr. Mario A. Rivera is the loss of an inspiring teacher, leader, mentor, and friend. His pursuit of knowledge, passion for teaching, and focus on social injustice challenged students to be the catalyst in stewarding the public realm toward a more just society. He served students well, and I thank him for that. I will be forever grateful for the life changing opportunities he provided to me and grateful that I had the opportunity to be his student, co-author, and friend. My sincerest condolences to his wife Ana, and his daughters, Alyssa, Sara, and Gabriella, and his mother and siblings.

Dr. Rivera was one of the professors who challenged me to excel beyond what I believed was capable. His work and teaching inspired me to strive towards working on good public policy grounded in research. I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Rivera as my career in government progressed. Having had the opportunity to speak at length with Mario, I can only feel gratitude and thankfulness for having known him. He was singular, phenomenal, and I can genuinely say my life has been improved due to his various influences over it. He is also, qualifiably, the biggest boon to my everyday, broadened use of vocabulary since my high school years. I know he will be missed, and I am, genuinely and sincerely, sorry for your loss.
